Part of the lifestyle we enjoy in Casco Antiguo has to do with services that don’t break the bank. When the owner of Chateau de Klippers returned to the USA, many of felt a void because it meant driving into the city instead of walking to Calle 9. I finally located three of the people from Klippers and decided to invite a few Casqueños over for a Spa Night. It was such fun.
Leaving the office late one night last week I was surprised to find myself stepping out into the middle of a music video. Some of our neighbors from Calle 4ta were shooting the video for Shadow’s new song, Dejalo Correr. The song talks about violence and its consequences, a pertinent theme for the young men of Calle 4ta who, as former gang members, have the experience-based wisdom to speak about violence and its negative impact on the community with some authority.
Some might not believe it, but when you compile numbers... it is incredible to see. Casco Viejo is truly leading Panama as an example of social revitalization fueled by an economy that is gathering its own momentum. Its image is one of the favorite subjects of international reporters who find in Casco Viejo`s historic architecture and mixed community a wonderful story to tell... the story of true Panama and why people should come to explore it.
Fundación San Felipe is one of the oldest ngo`s working in Casco. Although you might not be aware of them, they keep one of Casco`s jewels in great shape (the San Felipe Neri Church) and run programs for kids in the neighborhood.
Walking to the office, found this incredible surprise! straight from mother nature... reminding us wildlife is exactly that... crazy wild!
Downstairs, kids watch a pinguin movie at the computer lab. Normally, during their vacations they would have been roaming the streets with only mischief in their minds. Upstairs, a journalist defends freedom while downstairs freedom is created in the minds of local women who are breaking the cycle of poverty. Welcome to Santa Familia.
Santa Ana, one of Casco Antiguo`s most colorful barrios is celebrating its anniversary. Curious about the number that came out, I tried to research a bit about its history... still numbers don´t match! but, hey! anytime is good for a celebration...
If you are a pet owner, ticks are one of your worst nightmares. But ticks in tropical countries are everywhere... so what can you do? AVACA`s members got together into a fumigation program, hopefully with good effects!
Panama Viejo was founded in an undefendable and unhealthy swamp. The Spanish back in 1673 corrected this error by founding the "new city" at a rocky peninsula and surrounding the area with an amazing wall. Today, walking outside the wall is a beautiful experience... check it out!
Colombia`s 200th anniversary yesterday had given me the ocassion to tell about Casco Viejo... back when Panama was part of Colombia. Curious? fantastic historic photos here!
Did you know Panama uses and throws away 500 million plastic bags a year? each person on a single visit to the supermarket uses about 9 bags. We go to the supermarket once a week, and our population is about 3.5 million. What can we do? this is affecting our ecosystems... and we are part of it.
Movie Under the Stars, Jazz and Salsa live, concerts and La Bastille day... everything in July at the Casco!
I don`t know why I didn`t realize this before, but a big percentage of Casco`s entrepreneurs are in their thirties or early fourties. From internet businesses to restaurants and bars, Casco Viejo isn`t "viejo" (old) at all! Which is interesting, because it means the Casco offers an opportunity to make business happen.
When Leanne invited me to "Glam Night" last week I wasn´t quite sure what to expect. She mentioned it would be a "girls only" event and a lot of fun. First event of its kind in Casco! would it work?
Culture and money, for some reason they are not always perceived as close relatives. Culture and social change seem like cousins, but somehow not necesarily people think they go to the same parties. However, it is through culture that we generate tourism and many other activities... and it so happens that as a tool for change is quite a bomb on its own. And that bomb has started to catch a bit of fire in Casco Viejo.
Simply incredible. Overnight, the Cinta Costera had grass, trees and connected to San Felipe´s ramp! Still not clear though how traffic will work, especially the access to the "underground parking".
Most of Casco Viejo´s government buildings where designed by Italians. Today, the Italian influence is everywhere, from our President to restaurants and even hospitals. La Dolce Vita and Panama´s Caribbean style have proved to be a great combination!
I had some incredible dreams, all water related. No "mystery of the brain" here... outside it was pouring rain! When we came out for our morning workout, a beautiful rainbow had formed...
In the past few months we have gotten quite some interest from people coming to work with Procter and Gamble in living in Casco Viejo. They are attracted by the charm of the colonial city, its "small town" lifestyle and yet closeness to the modern areas of Panama and outdoor spaces where to excercise such as Cinta Costera, Ancon Hill and the Causeway. And I knew Procter was moving their headquarters from Chile here. What I didn´t know,
Some projects take a long time, this one started in 2006. However, it is crucial for Panama not only because it reorganizes the sewage system but because it is crucial to recover what is mainly our trademark: our oceans and rivers.
Have a beer with your friends, bring your dog, your family... and sit under the stars of Casco Viejo to watch a movie!
This past weekend, a small event to celebrate the Environment Day turned into a hughe success. Beautiful palms were planted, but also the seed into our children´s minds about taking care of trees and the environment.
The Panama Jazz Festival is an event that has transformed Panama´s dynamics in the music scene taking it to an international level. Yesterday, they announced the 2011 edition! check it out...
180 Degree contrast from my ultra mellow Sunday, in came this week with dozen of important events!
Hip Hop might be one of the best tools we have to talk to the new generations. Fundación Calicanto is hosting a workshop on June 10th with Hip Hop artist George Martínez.
How to fight poverty effectively is a question that thousands of organizations around the world make themselves every day. In Casco Viejo, Panama, an experiment that started about two years ago by Fundacion Calicanto has started to root and bear fruits. It is focused on women, knowing that through them, you are able to change a family and eventually a society.
How does it work? keep reading....
It seems like dance took over this month! Momentum with Wizard of Oz, Danza Nova with their recently created ngo... and more!
Since 2007 several multinationals have moved their headquarters to Panama. The first one to break the ice was Maersk. Today, there are 36 multinational companies in the country and the government´s goal for December 2011 is to reach the 100. See below the list
I don´t think there are official "dog parks" in Panama, anywhere, yet. However, Casco Viejo has a couple of sites that are regularly used by dog owners and have become doggy parks. They include beaches, park and furry loops... check it out!
Every 30 or 40 years Panama´s Catholic church celebrates the appointment of a new Monseñor. A beautifull ceremony takes place... and I was there to catch part of it with my camera!
Tacón in Spanish means "high heels", and somehow is the name of this contemporary art workshop that will take place at Calle 3era (Los del Patio losdelpatio.pa@gmail.com ). Starting May 1st, the workshop will last 6 months, and will be held every Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
If you are interested in participating, send your work! admissions are until April 1
Hurrays at todays La Prensa: Panama made it to BBB ratings! Our gang now includes Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. The official press conference and details will be on March 24th. If you would like to participate, here is the info.
This Thursday March 25th, Mojito’s Sin Mojitos in conjunction with Panama Artist Collective’s ARTBLOCK will be hosting a show of works by Casco Viejo’s renowned street artist Chingy. Pieces will be within a $5-$25 price range with %25 of profits going to the artist and %25 to the Panama Artists Collective (PAC).
The Arco Chato was shinning bright last night: it´s Santo Domingo monastery got restored and inagurated.
This Thursday, a group of artists (glad to see our Casconian representatives!!!) have gathered in an unusual event: an auction for art made with recycled paper. "Paper" in Spanish is also called "Papel" which happens to be also the word we use as in "roll" (a.i. the roll of a person). So it is called the "Roll/Paper of artists counts".
Last night, Panama had its very first "heavy metal" concert! and we enjoyed the hell out of it. I didn´t realize how many heavy metal lovers we had in Casco Viejo, and probably they didn´t realize I was one of them as well. Panama has a unique species of headbangers, not like anyone in Latin America... nor the States.
The "little devils" at Diablo Rosso are organizing a series of talks about Patrimony. They´ll promise a lot of quality information and no "bla bla bla"... straight to the point! Whether you are interested in the technical part of restoration, or in the legal basis, or how Patrimony works around the world and compare it to Casco, this is a series you can´t miss.
La Casona will be hosting this weekend in honor to Women´s Day an art show featuring female Panamanian artists. Last time I was there, she featured great work from Marta Sanchez and many other artists who worked either painting, photography, and even sculpture. This year they are including oriental dance, jewelry and more! The weekend seems to start with a nice Electro & Dancehall party!
Walking down to our dinner appointment at Antares, I passed by the San José Church at A Avenue (better known as Altar de Oro or Golden Altar) and to my surprise a sweet music was coming out: the Paraguayan Embassy had arranged a free concert featuring Bach and Vivaldi (not the Seasons! concerto for piccolo and strings) and some works from the Jesuit missions in South America. Beautiful! I only wished these things where known in advance.
Social change can be tackled different ways, but probably the most sustainable one is when people from all layers of a community come together for a common goal. Slowly, Casco Viejo is becoming a model on how to fight extreme poverty through community activism.
Art gallery opens in Casco Viejo! at Calle 1era, next to Galería Indigena.
Remember the Love Boat? The German version is here! in Casco Viejo...
Carnival is the Be All End All of Panama´s partying scene. How to survive it? Here are seven good tips...
Hotel Central: You could start pointing fingers right left and center. But really, who is to blame?
You might not know this, but the way a bus in Panama is painted isn´t that random. It is actually a canvas of both the owner and the painter. Painted on its walls you´ll see who they admire, what they dream off, how they see themselves and who they love. This art is almost dissappearing now because of the bad reputation of the drivers. Get to know it now! keep reading...
Looking to rent in Casco Antiguo? here is a wide list of what is available right now in 2010.
Being a tooth is so unfair: no one thinks about you, you get smashed right, left and center, and when something happens it is really expensive to fix it. But doesn´t have to be. In fact, you could get everything you need for your teeth done in Panama with great quality and still go partying. Check this out,
Every day, people bring hope. And that is the real beauty of the fight.
2009 was an "interesting" year for business and the market in general. How did the financial crisis affected Casco Viejo? How was 2009 in terms of Real Estate, investment, community? How is 2010 looking like?
In the last 8 years, Panama has had an incredible growth. Tourism, construction, the Panama Canal, banking, every area seemed to be thriving, and got the country to touch amazing growing rates comparable only with China (9% - 10%). But there was an area that was left behind: public transportation. Today, we got good news about it.
Roy Gumpel has a very good eye and a sense of authenticity. He has also 36 years in the photography business and an outgoing personality. Visited Panama for a job last year and fell in love with Casco Viejo, so now he is back! He is organizing a photography workshop called "For the Rest of Us" which will start January 16th (so you can have great photos of the Jazz Fest!).
Waste less, workout more, better eating habits, drink more water... so many thoughts cross through your mind when thinking about this upcoming year. But they are only thoughts until you work at making them real. As Nike said... "Just do it". This should be called the "Just Do It"- Year.
The final countdown for the Panama Jazz Festival 2010 has started. This year, the event will be dedicated to Sonny White who was a Panamanian pianist from the 20´s who played with international music stars such as Billie Holiday, Willie Bryant and Frankie Newton. Check out who is playing when and where!
This year our family decided to go with eco wrappings for Christmas. I´ve been wrapping with newspapers for a long time, but only now it seemed to "catch on". I´m sort of proud of my collection this year, so here it is! hope you like it...
I have to say, I worked at the Smithsonian and once of the things I never got tired of was visiting the Panama Canal. Nothing like navigating through pure jungle, checking out the monkeys (cariblancos, titis, howlers), the crocodriles, the birds and of course, the huge Panamax ships.

Casco Viejo is more than ever connected to the rest of Panama City thanks to the Cinta Costera. The original plans, however, included a piece that would literally connect Terraplen and somehow it didn´t get done during the past administration. A controversial project from the start! We finally have the plans.
2009 Latino Center Awards have been given to five outstanding Panamanians... three of them Casconians. Hurray!!!!

Her name and her work are legendary...
Direct flight from Panama to Amsterdam: ten hours (and a half) later I had passed from full tropical weather to Amsterdam´s chilli autum, and eating dutch pancakes wrapped in four layers of clothing. Being from Panama, for me, cold is an exotic destination. But really, While I can take a plane at night and be in cold weather the next morning eating pancakes, anyone in Amsterdam can do the same and be on a boat at the Panama Canal lake in the afternoon watching monkeys or even hiking at one of our 15 minute away national parks and discover what the rainforest is all about.
"The neighborhood has received its share of hype over the past few years. Travel writers have mused that it might become the next South Beach. Real estate investors, thoroughly enchanted by its romantic balconies festooned with colorful flowers, have called it one of the hemisphere's best-kept secrets. So when a working trip to Panama City materialized, I jumped at the chance to stay in the Casco Viejo." Read the Full Article
Casco Viejo community woke up early this Sunday. Their goal: clean one of Casco´s most recognizable beaches, but also create awareness about garbage disposal in the old quarter.

What a weekend! Panama´s Presidential Election, How does it work? who won? what to expect?
Developing in Casco Viejo is both a science and an art. Experience and common sense have to blend with the historic restrictions and be sensitive to the environment. It is a complex process that we only recommend to people who have the correct skills and team behind them, and that will be on the ground full time for at least three years. While most of our clients might feel this is too much, every year I see examples of what can happen if something goes wrong. Yesterday, we witnessed a very sad example of lack of planning and the most basic common sense, which led to the partial destruction of one of Casco Antiguo´s most valuable icons.
After all these ultra serious postings about the economy, Panama´s and Casco Viejo´s most recent mega projects, it is time for some silly pictures....
With health coverage droping in countries like the United States it makes sense for people to look for other options. It seems that Panama is almost 50% cheaper than the States and quality isn´t compromised.
Running from one side to the other, Ivana and her daughter receives you into their recently opened Pana Art store with a big smile.
With a diversified economy and a strong, conservative, banking system, Panama is on the move to protect the country as much as possible from the current economic crisis. For the last three years, Panama positioned itself as one of the fastest growing economies in the region, with numbers as far as 10% a growth reached only by countries such as China.Worldwide, this year has been very different for everyone. But Panama’s advantage over the region may survive ...
To spark change through dance. To transform children into creative forces... Casco Viejo has started a pioneer program that will change from inside out.
Great local food and sexy girls, Casco Antiguo Fashion Festival dressed up Plaza Catedral with the best of Panamanian fashion design and paid tribute to Panamanian photographer Gustavo Araujo who died tragically last December.
Panama will receive today a delegation led by Prince Philippe of Belgium and his Minister of Economy Vincent Van Quickenborne. The goal: to participate in the expasion of the Panama Canal and explore the country´s benefits as a regional hub.
Breaking the cycle of poverty in Casco Viejo is really simple. It just takes dedication, knowledge and love. Children are so eager for these elements, they´ll do the rest. They have found a home in this program, and now their home just got better!
These past two weeks have been a frenzy for Ariel Espino and his team at Oficina del Casco Antiguo. Not only he was running business as usual with all the social programs the OCA has and building renovations that range from social housing within Casco Viejo to the rescue of old ruins and turning them into beautiful public spaces, but he was also - and for the first time at that office - launching an ambitious website, and even more, hosting a special UNESCO delegation that arrived to check on how things where going down here due to some letters they have gotten that the Casco was in danger.
In celebration for Women´s Day (or week... or year?) a friend just sent me one of these forwards with feminist jokes (which I happened to enjoy a lot by the way!) to give a laugh at the eternal extremes of the "battle of the sexes". In Casco Viejo, however, we celebrated with a significant event.
I´m sure that, if it wasn´t because of my little cellphone camera, people would say I make all this stuff up. But it is not true! my cellphone says so.
Fiesta! This upcoming week is Panama´s most beloved holiday: Carnivals. It is said to be the only thing Panamanians take seriously. My personal opinion is that Carnivals are too extreme for my taste. However, visiting a country during its special holidays is the best way to enjoy a trip. So here is a calendar with the different religious and non religious festivals which can come in handy if you are planning a trip to Panama soon
I keep updating this, but businesses are opening very fast. More to come soon in Cuatro Casas!
With the US and specific places like New York going out of jobs for all ages, but specially the younger crowd, Panama, somehow is now attracting a completely different profile almost by accident: young, professional and entrepreneurial.
"Despite the global economic downturn, Panama's economy remains strong—the country expects GDP growth of 8% this year, Nordström says, and while work on hotel projects has slowed slightly, construction permits are up 35%, he says." Check out this article from HOTELS magazine... quite interesting!
Danilo Perez and his music education revolution is storming throughout Panama! Started at Casco Antiguo with the creation of the Danilo Perez Music School at the old music Conservatory in Plaza Herrera and now music workshops are happening at several cities in the interior: Chitré, David (Chiriquí) and Colon.
Here is the information, for those who might be interested!
The US Marines invade Casco Viejo! learn why.....
This weekend was all about good vibes. Music, art and romance filled the old brick streets. Love summer!
When I was little I had dogs, cats a rabbit and even a hen. But I lived in a house in the suburbs, and pets where the "must do" of the area. When I moved to Casco Viejo, one of the things I never imagined having, as I´m living in an apartment, was to have a pet. But last week,
A historic event took place today. The old music conservatory came alive. A dream came true. Lives where changed. All because of two visionaries: Danilo Perez and Conservatorio S.A.
Althought the official calendar for the Panama Jazz Festival points out January 12th as the starting date for the festival, and even if the concerts are the better known part of the festival, in fact it really has a very important educational component that started early on this week.
Carlos Weil Art Gallery and the Ministry of Culture will present Jazz and Canal, a collective art show of antiques related to the Panama Canal: original bonds, photographies, paintings and even music scores. We have known Carlos for many years, and I have to say his collection is always intriguing and brings something different to the table. So don´t miss this opportunity! It will be at Las Bovedas Gallery in Plaza Francia.
With a golden summer sun shinning over its beautiful colonial buildings and brick streets, Casco Antiguo welcomes 2009 with a bag of good news:
The Panama Jazz Festival is almost here! they just sent a message through their Facebook group announcing their first music workshop. Registrations open until December 20th. Find here the info for all of you who might be interested:
As Christmas approaches, the city goes crazy. Yesterday, Panama´s traditional Christmas Parade took over Avenida Balboa. Thousands of kids running around, piling up to see the cars and trucks dressed up with miscellaneous Christmas themes. But where are all these props made? you would be surprised to know that the "Factory of Dreams" carved in foam is in Casco Viejo. More specifically, next to the Cathedral, run not by Santa but by Franz.
One of the well known tactics to attract children anywhere is to have them make fun stuff. Aprojusan, a local ngo, uses art as honey to get local children to assist to their center. While they are there, they receive help with homework, basic healthcare and emotional support. Now, while we where trying to have a serious conversation... check out the madness around us! I was about to skip office to join them...
A friend forwarded me a NY Times article the other day on how Buffalo, a historic city in USA was looking to the future. It described an active community and a common vision to see their city not become Disney World, but an authentic, green and thriving place. There is still those who ask "when is it going to be finished"... my answer is right here...
Last night (finally!) I went to see Quantum of Solace.I was incredibly pleased to discover how Casco Viejo looked under Marc Forster´s eye: it was very raw but also mixed with elegant and a lot of texture. Find out what they think about filming in Panama!
Obama´s election was cheered by everyone. However, there is so much stuff to fix at home, so many sacrifices to be made... so much hard work. What about Panama? Casco Viejo? what are the advantages, the choices?
A pioneer program at Casco Antiguo is changing the lives of underprivileged residents.
Carlos Endara Andrade was the leading photographer of his time. He lived between 1865 and 1954 and is responsible for a big bunch of the pictures you know that are floating around the internet and other publications on Panama´s early days as a republic and surroundings (he did a lot on Taboga as well). His portraits provide a window to the diverse Panamanian society of the times, which in many ways are the basis of today´s society. Now, a private museum in Casco Viejo has opened its doors to show his work. A wonderful place full of inspiration, a unique window to the roots of Panama.
Planning your vacations to Panama and don’t have much time? If you like nature, history, big machinery, culture and architecture, then there are only 2 destinations within Panama City that can offer all this in a compact, yet authentic experience: the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo.
Arco Chato is one of the most known landmarks in Casco Viejo and is a direct responsible on why the Panama Canal is here and not in Nicaragua. After years of being neglected, it finally fell in 2003. I call it a lesson on never taking stuff for granted, and that things like a "country" aren´t just there... they need to be nurtured and taken care of. Now is back up and with new additions that will give a boost to the local community.
This weekend was a lot of fun. Unusual events, urban art everywhere. Baños Públicos at its best! my photos are good, but I think I´m going to get a video camera next time. Tried to do it over my Sony cellphone, but didn´t really work...
Last night, a group of friends organized a tapas night at Canal House in Casco Viejo with Argimiro, a Panamanian young chef who studied in Spain and even did his professional practice at the famous El Bulli Restaurant (Ferrán Adriá, 2 and 3 Michelin stars!). When Argimiro returned to Panama, he fell in love with Casco Viejo and I have to say we fell in love with his food, so anytime he organizes a party or just a tapas night we are more than thrilled. And last night we had a treat.
Casco Antiguo is gearing its construction towards the most productive time of the year: summer! Learn about the status of the projects and where can you buy units. Ranging from all sorts of amenities to tax benefits and architectural styles.
During the last weekend after completing the Second Songwriter Festival on Casa Góngora in San Felipe, Spanish singer-songwriter Jesús Garriga visited us and delighted us with his music on this great festival.
The 6th edition of the Panama Jazz Fest in 2009 is already on its way. Music, workshops, scholarships and a new music school in Panama by the Foundation Danilo Perez. Where? when?
So the countdown for Quantum of Solace has begun! Everyone in Casco Viejo is bitting nails... when! when!!!!! we certainly want to see Daniel Craig, but more importantly... we want to see ourselves!!!!
Heriberto Trejos had a big smile on his face. A group of women who live in San Felipe, Santa Ana and Chorrillo are being interviewed to participate in a hotel training course organized by Fundacion Calicanto. As the manager of the foundation, Heriberto has a diverse portfolio of social projects, all of them with a common goal: breaking the cycle of poverty in the local families of Casco Antiguo, allowing them to take control of their lives and be an active element of the thriving future of the historic city.
A classic Monday morning in Casco Viejo: I was on the phone and at the same time answering emails (or deleting early spam… somehow the prince of Mombatu is still considering sending me at least $200,000 directly to my bank account, no papers signed) when suddenly a loud noise started to approach. “Drums…. Drums in the deep”…
Ever since the slavery trade times, African traditional religions have been concealed by their followers under Cristianity... for obvious reasons. Today, many, many years later, the reminiscents are still there. And in Casco Viejo, very much alive!
Latin American Graphic Design is Taschen´s new book featuring the best graphic artists in the region. For Panama, it showcases the work of young agencies and artists such as...
Last week the world went bananas on the trade market. A rollercoaster that has more than one at the edge of a heart attack, it has been really worrysome for all of us to see gigants fall and take with them everything they can. Markets in Asia, Japan and Europe have been affected. In Panama, however, things have been slightly different.
When Al Gore launched his “ Inconvenient Truth” he touched many nerves world wide. Liked it or not, people reacted in such a way that has forced all relevant presidential candidates ( like Barak Obama and John Mccain) to take note of these issues seriously. The energy crisis is real. Just today (and to make things worst) I opened the newspaper and read how hurricane Ike has at least a dozen of refineries closed in the United States. Food crisis is coming up next. What can we do?
KLM and Air France flights to Panama keep increasing. In a world where most air companies are actually doing the opposite, this is highly unusual. Learn why!
If you are planning to travel to Panama and exploring real estate will probably be part of the fun, this is the people you’ll need to meet:
Brook Alfaro is one of Panama´s most recognized artists nationally and internationally. A relaxed guy, his paintings are a hurricane of emotions you would never guess from just knowing him socially. His best place to get inspiration?
Last night, the United Nations Environmental Programee inaugurated at the National Theatre in Casco Antiguo their "For the Earth" Festival. It will last a month, with several activities withing Casco Antiguo, ranging from poetry to rock concerts. Most of the activities will be held at
A new client recently asked me “Is Casco Viejo gay friendly?” For a moment I had to think about the question. You see, growing up as a ballet dancer I never even gave a thought to it.
With the ramping increase in oil prices, transportation is becoming more expensive. Still, in Panama it is possible to take a taxi for as low as $1.35, depending of course, on where you are going. As much as users in Panama might take a while to adjust to the new prices, because of the subsidized oil it is still cheap. Find out the new chart here...
A few days ago I got an email from a journalist at The Guardian, as they´ve found somehow my postings on La Casona in Casco Viejo. It was quite exciting, this is my first collaboration with international press! Here is the article:
Casco Viejo will host a very special event in September. The United Nation´s agency for the Environment (known in Spanish as PNUMA) will present an art festival featuring artists from different disciplines, from poetry to street painting. Check out the event calendar here!
Travel like a local with The Guardian. Surfing the web as I usually do, I found this article on Panama´s nightlife at The Guardian, featuring Casco Viejo. And not only Casco Viejo, but my favorite spots: Baños Publicos and La Casona! Check it out here!
Calle 4ta is getting artsy! Galería Vida is Casco Antiguo´s new kid on the block, next to Entre Pulgas and to Casa Gongora. With years of experience in working with indigenous communities you can get high quality stuff at great prices!
Multiple websites and adds mention Panama as Paradise. Is it really? what about Casco Viejo?
Do you know what is SENACYT? find out! they are launching their 4th Technology and Innovation Awards with an amazing budget of 8 million dollars to distribute between the winners!
Last Saturday a nice article came out about Casco Viejo (which in Panama is known as San Felipe, Catedral, la Ciudad... so many names!). I looked for it in the electronic version of La Prensa, but couldn´t find it. So here is my translation and the original piece scanned at the bottom. It talks about speculation, restoration, patrimony (human and architectural) and what has been done in the past 10 years.
While everybody is excited today about Beijing´s dramatic opening for the Olimpics (which, by the way, where simply amazing! wao), another bright sun shined this morning over the newspaper as they announced
I swear I had this great-very-serious article about the gas refinery projects that are coming to Panama, but someone just sent me this amazing picture and I just couldn´t help it. Check it out and you´ll see what I mean.
For the last two years, La Casona de las Brujas has been the center of the Panamanian bohemian scene. The space located at the old Maria Imaculada School near Plaza Herrera served as art gallery, concert hall, disco, art school for local children and just the favorite afterhours neighborhood hang out.
An amazing program is changing the lives of local families in Casco Antiguo. Check it out and join!
Panama´s National Theatre was literally born with the Republic. The need to build it was at the first Gacetas Oficiales in 1903 - 1904 along with main stuff like a Presidential Palace and public bathrooms. It was the heart of social life and culture. Today, we celebrate its 100 year anniversary with a bit of history and wonderful events in August and October.
We received a flash note from Quintessentially announcing the next "Silent Auction" of Fundacion San Felipe. This year, it will be held at the Marriott hotel, and all proceeds will go to their various programs ranging from art to photography for kids.
Ciudad del Saber or City of Knowledge is literally a city within one of the former US military bases called Clayton. One of the most visionary compounds in Panama, it has become a technopark that holds universities, laboratories, incubators for young entrepreneurs and just all sorts of new stuff. If it is revolutionary, ground breaking, you can get in and benefit from a wide platform of incentives. So who is there and what is it exactly that they do? for example,
The Oficina del Casco Antiguo has been quite busy. From cultural events to the urban planning of the Casco there are very few aspects where they aren´t present. It´s Director is a dinamyc architect with a passion for historic cities, which makes it perfect. In this interview, he speaks about the train project , the advances against speculation, the controversial projects at Hotel Central and the old Club Union.
Have you seen those TV shows where they take a one level house and turn it into a mansion or where they promise you to look at least ten years younger by changing your makeup, style or even surgery? I have seen some incredible human makeovers in a show that is all about plastic surgery.
Well, in a way, restorations at Casco Viejo have the same incredible effects.
The best of the Casco Viejo and the French Expats gathered yesterday to celebrate France´s most important holiday. The party was at Plaza Francia (of course!). Check out photos of the celebration, along with historic photos as far as 1923 of other celebrations, including the inauguration itself of Plaza de Francia.
It isn´t summer, but somehow Casco Viejo hasn´t slowed down too much regarding cultural events. August 8th will have a special presentation of a German Jazz Duet where all profits will go to social work in Darien. July still gets a Contemporary Dance Encounter and an Art Auction from the Museum of Contemporary Art at Casa Cor. Learn when and who to contact here!
This is not "body painting", claims the artist Ramon Almanza. Throughout my work I always ended up representing the female form and at some point I thought, it would be great to transfer my vision directly to a female body! Today, at Casa Gongora, his art show will feature...
Ok. So Panama is about 20 years behind on releasing its E Commerce legislation, but ... hey! ... at least it is out there now! know more about it, download the law.
Passionate, skillful and thoughful. Samantha, our Casco Viejo female surf champion fired up in Cambutal last weekend at Cambutal and took home a very good prize. She has become a national pride and a local roll model.
Often your best memories of places where you have been are actually from people you have met. In Casco Antiguo we are lucky to still have with us "antique" residents that are very much part of the different textures of this neighborhood. Miss Daisy is one of them...
I had a literature teacher that used to say: taking out the obvious great masters, at the end of the day, the line between art and non art these days is very fine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There used to be a clear difference between folk, handcraft and art. Today, it is all fusion, pieces dancing from one concept to the other, depending on the latest critic review. However, she said, don´t be ashamed if you feel confused. Think about this: if YOU enjoy it, it is art to you. And if the artist brings love to its work, then it is in it´s purest form.
Sometimes the world´s problems overwhealm you: politicians are doing their best to make your life worst, news of contamination, low education in the new generations, Dooms Day. But sometimes we are reminded that we do have the power to change things around. We actually excersice that power every day... That is one of the many things I like about Casco Viejo. Small projects have a huge impact... check this out and get inspired.
The Cinta Costera (coast strip) at Panama´s Balboa Avenue is moving forward and fast. Regardless of the many comments regarding the percentage of actual green area vs cement and plazas or the origin of the funding for the huge work, I have to say that Odebrecht has done a great job getting things done on record time.
Panama´s Bienale is coming up in September. This year it features an interesting and almost unexplored theme: the ex Canal Zone, a controversial area that divided the country in two but also helped build the beautiful cultural diversity that Panama offers as a country today. Learn more! the work will be shown in the most authentic part of Panama: Casco Viejo, located 2 minutes away from it.
All over Panama City, the one thing that is rarely missing on the streets where there is parking is a bien cuidao...

Almost a month ago we launched an Urban Composting Contest aimed to provide the comunity of Casco Antiguo with a system to not only recycle their organic trash but also to be able to grow food that would balance their diet and ultimately even sell to restaurants. The results so far are interesting...
Every year, around September, a group of artists present their work at the Contemporary Art Museum. This year, several "Casco Addicts" are competing: film directors Abner Benhaim and Enrique Castro Ríos. Other years have had photographer Rachelle Mozman, who is also a Casco resident
Back in 1998 things where quite different in Casco Viejo. It was more Viejo than Casco. It was a fragile, run down, un protected site most people in Panama (government and not) had "written off". Back then, a group of passionate profesionals stood up and basically made it happen: brought the attention of UNESCO and worked until this endangered species was protected for life. Today, they run life changing programs in the Casco Viejo community. Check it out!
The Mission: buying for less than $350,000 in Casco Antiguo. It can be a challenging task! But one of the advantages of being a full service brokerage specialized only in Casco Viejo is that we get to know all the projects and apartments whether we build it or not. For us, it is all about presenting you with the best option that fits your specific need and budget. So go ahead, bring your calculator and sharpen your pencils. Here is the naked truth: prices, sizes, everything you wanted to know!
Meditating about what has value and what doesn´t is a profound activity, almost zen-like. It has to do with the fundamentals of the property, but on a bigger picture even that is subdued to one and only factor: what makes a human happy.
Just another day in my office and suddenly... tarataraaaraaa.... carnival music and people singing: the classic signs of a religious procesion in Casco Viejo. I know most people feel a serious ceremony should be more appropiate, but so far I haven´t seen any procession here that is not filled with music, ballons and flowers.
Thomas was one of our first tenants in Casa Padrós, at the back of the ex music Conservatorio building, in Plaza Herrera. Originally from Holland, Thomas has travelled all around and spent quite some time in Panama all the way from Bocas del Toro to Casco Antiguo taking fantastic pictures. We´ll be featuring some of his work in my blog
Buying real estate in Casco Antiguo is a research intensive task. It is about information (of course) but also about gut feeling. A mix between ...
Entrepreneurship is a beautiful thing to see. Locals getting up by themselves and actively being part of Casco Antiguo´s revitalization. That is fantastic. VIP Fruits and Sandwiches is here!
Netherland´s most celebrated artist, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (better known as Rembrandt) will visit Panama and will stay in Casco Viejo from April 17th to June 8th. But he isn´t the only Dutch in town...
The existance of different beaches is Casco´s most guarded secret. And people use them. A true beach lifestyle in the middle of an urban city.
A classic scene: tourist wants to go to Casco Viejo and asks a taxi driver to take him. The taxi says, oh no, it is dangerous. Don´t go there. Actually, ask most Panamanians and you are crazy to even consider living here. But somehow a miracle happens: the visitor (now really curious about the place) gets to Casco Viejo... and

With all the world’s climate issues, we would like to take this opportunity to get everyone thinking about a more sustainable Casco, an example to the rest of Panama City. The seeds are already getting planted... join us! there is a fun contest here, where you can really make the difference.
Our friend Mary sent us this interesting article. I smiled at the phrase "the secret is out" since it´s been out for a while now, but a good word out is always welcomed!
In the heavily regulated external skin of Casco Viejo there is little space for this rebelious behavior. But inside it... surprises may pop up! as we have always said, this is a live, young city... even if it has hundreds of years!
All I actually knew about the pedestrian mall on Avenida Central was "Don´t take anything valuable there!". So I avoided going. I´m ashamed, embarrassed, and am making amends. The day I visited...
Last Tuesday was the first Panama Edition of Slideluck Postshow Panama. For those who didn´t read my prior posting, this event had a great concept: basically everyone could show up with something cooked by themselves to share with others while a super art slideshow played at Arco Chato

You read our newsletter and our blog and you think you like the place, but still not sure if Casco is right for you? This short list can help you out.
Events Calendar... updated! International Festival of Performance Arts coming soon...
March is the month when most schools start in Panama. In a few weeks, the Casco (and the country) will be filled with excited kids running around like crazy in their blue uniforms with smiles on their faces walking to school. Despite all their enthusiasm, truth is that most parents from the community find it very difficult to buy all the necessary books and materials. This is a campaign to raise funds to help them out. Want to be part of it? Takes very little...
There is something special about every season, but summer in Casco Viejo is without a doubt the most fun. Starting with the jazz fest and following with all small and big cultural events. Sunny days, wonderful ambiance...
Don´t get jealous...come down and join us!
I have to admit it: as a spanish speaker (and naive one when it comes out to words and literal meanings) I had no idea what a Slideluck Potshow meant. Having grown up watching movies where "pot" is used to refer to a very specific aromatic herb I was getting the idea this artistic event was getting way too artistic! Also, the blend of slide with luck really made no sense at all. But then I found out is actually a cool event, and a good thing I kept my ignorance to myself while the organizers explained everything in details...
More summer activities! this time organized by the National Institute of Culture (Inac). From art courses for children to journalism workshops. A theatre festival from February 8th to the 14th and another scenic art festival from April 1st to the 6th! check out when and where are these events happening..
I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a client. He was looking for a property in Casco, mainly an apartment, and he asked me what was the best purchase he could make. Here are 5 easy steps to answer that question.
Experts say the biggest investment potential is in the emerging markets – in particular the likes of Bulgaria and even Panama, Egypt, Brazil and China. The past 3 years have seen a surge in interest in less traditional overseas property destinations, according to HiFX’s Annual Global Property Hot Spots roundup.
Panama Real Estate Investment: This is a small project which we hope plant the seed for a big change and help raise the bar in developments in the area. It will be the first project in the old city to have...
You open the newspaper anywhere in the world (Panama is not the exception!) and all you see is trouble. Get to the "international" section and you are splashed with the blood of all the current conflicts overseas, which are, sad enough, many. The environment is suffering no matter what people say or don´t say and everything sounds so apocaliptic it makes you unsensitive. It surpasses your level of caring. What can I do? I´m just one person. Problems are just so overwhealming. We have too many of our own problems to be worrying about water, pollution, poverty and war. But then I get to work, to my "mini" environment, to those small things I can control and contribute. From home composting to donating courses for low income families to get their children to the Scouts or the mothers back to school. Small details that change their lives forever, a great return for little money and a lot of good will. One of the things I enjoy the most from living, working and investing in Casco Viejo is that it gives me the opportunity to help others around me. I didn´t have that compelling thrive when I lived outside Casco. The phrase "To Live, to love, to learn and to leave a legacy" was confined to teaching ballet the best I could to my young students. But in Casco Viejo you can be the difference. And the multiplying effect is almost immediate. Families growing happier, step by step taking control of their lives. Children learning new skills with a smile on their face. Buildings getting restored, history recovered. A city coming back to life. At the end of the day, we don´t need to save the world. We only need to save as much as our street. Not even our neighborhood! that will fall naturally. Sometimes I think the problem is when people say: either I go for the big stuff or I don´t do it at all. Well... Big stuff is important, but starting on the lower level sometimes is more meaningful and creates the basis for the big stuff to happen when things are ready. And what do I gain? directly: happy neighbors! In my own small way, I believe a better neighborhood makes for a better country and a better future.
Panama got a 40 Million Dollar financing to clean Panama´s bay. A "simple" task with endless positive effects. What does this mean for Panama City? for Casco Viejo?
Panama, Community: In need of a haircut? Panama now has a wide range of options... but very few (probably none!) like V.I.P in Avenida A and Calle 5ta. A unique barbershop run by one of Casco´s gang (known as Calle 4ta)
Green Panama: Here is an exciting project on the move: transforming Casco Antiguo into an organic garden. Our friend and organic specialist Spencer is already working on it, and I have to say it´s fascinating.
Panama Art. Known as La Reformada back in 1917 - 21, this building was the masterpiece of Arquitect Leonardo Villanueva Meyer. The first "skycraper" of Panama (5 floors!) When the area decayed, it became the home of a dangerous gang. Today, with the area clear and hopefully a renovation plan coming up, La Casona proposes an interesting art show about the testimonials left on the walls by the gang on how their lives and hopes where. Don´t miss it!
Investing in Real Estate in Panama. I often comment on my clients that Casco Antiguo is like Woody Allen: either you hate it or you love it, there is no "in between". It is definatly not for everyone. For the right person, it is very easy to fall in love with it on their first visit. They get the same feeling as a kid walking into a store with tons of candy, wide smile on their faces, dreams about their restored home. But... hey! wake up! it takes some serious work and personal honesty to go further this point and succeed.
Dance Festival in Casco Antiguo from December 12th to the 16th. The Casco continues to celebrate it´s 10th anniversary as World Heritage Site with all sorts of activities, from sculpture show to vertical performance. Check out the schedule and where to get more info...
Panama, Casco Antiguo Casco Viejo, San Felipe

The bollo man, the yogurt girl, the chicheme guy and the grilled chicken family... they are all examples of local Casco Viejo neighbors that have created sucessful businesses. How can we help spread that "inner fire" around? keep reading... and join the cause!
For such a small country, Panama is suddenly surrounded by heavy players. On one hand, the Panama Canal expansion project will cost over $5 billion dollars, and on the other hand, big guys such as Hewlett - Packard, Caterpillar, the Swiss Sanofi- Aventis, Procter & Gamble and Sinope from China have either expressed their interest of moving headquarters here or are actually doing so. But where does Casco Viejo fit in all this?
For many, the Casco is love at first sight. Everyone has his or her own first memory, or a turning point where they decided to live, work or invest here… Don’t be shy! Take a moment and post your story!
For me, early memories of the Casco are profoundly linked with my family and my childhood. I hope you enjoy the opening of this blog!
