Last night, Panama had its very first "heavy metal" concert! and we enjoyed the hell out of it. I didn´t realize how many heavy metal lovers we had in Casco Viejo, and probably they didn´t realize I was one of them as well. Panama has a unique species of headbangers, not like anyone in Latin America... nor the States.

The "little devils" at Diablo Rosso are organizing a series of talks about Patrimony. They´ll promise a lot of quality information and no "bla bla bla"... straight to the point! Whether you are interested in the technical part of restoration, or in the legal basis, or how Patrimony works around the world and compare it to Casco, this is a series you can´t miss.

La Casona will be hosting this weekend in honor to Women´s Day an art show featuring female Panamanian artists. Last time I was there, she featured great work from Marta Sanchez and many other artists who worked either painting, photography, and even sculpture. This year they are including oriental dance, jewelry and more! The weekend seems to start with a nice Electro & Dancehall party!

The boys at Relic really know how to throw a party!!! everyone shows up, including President Ricardo Martinelli.

Walking down to our dinner appointment at Antares, I passed by the San José Church at A Avenue (better known as Altar de Oro or Golden Altar) and to my surprise a sweet music was coming out: the Paraguayan Embassy had arranged a free concert featuring Bach and Vivaldi (not the Seasons! concerto for piccolo and strings) and some works from the Jesuit missions in South America. Beautiful! I only wished these things where known in advance.

Mediterranean food with a Lebanese touch. I hope eventually they´ll decide more for Lebanese, as I´m a big fan. Check out Casco Antiguo´s new restaurant: Antar!

FAO Theatre Festival is here! From March 17th to 24th, the National Theatre, Anita Villalaz Theatre (at Las Bovedas) and La Casona will have several performances from troups from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, USA, Mexico and Panama. Panama Jazz Fest 2010 Calendar

Roy Gumpel has a very good eye and a sense of authenticity. He has also 36 years in the photography business and an outgoing personality. Visited Panama for a job last year and fell in love with Casco Viejo, so now he is back! He is organizing a photography workshop called "For the Rest of Us" which will start January 16th (so you can have great photos of the Jazz Fest!).

The final countdown for the Panama Jazz Festival 2010 has started. The old Union Club has been an iconic building in Casco since its foundation in the 1920´s. This weekend, due to a very windy storm, it lost it´s chimney (and the tree that was holding it together).

Starting this week on May 21th until June 7th on La Casona you will be able to enjoy the beauty of art with the Exposition named "Escaramujo y el Angel en la Ciudad" by Fernanda Vargas and King Chay.

 

With "The Angel in the City" he wants to express how the artist can be in either place at the same time, without the need to be physically there.

With "Escaramujo, El Universo es mi Casa" and the metaphor of Silvio Rodriguez she realized that the universe is her home and that She is a citizen in the world. The Escaramujo is her way to live the moment, a creation, something that constantly change.

Together they show their art, in the same place and at the same time. King Chay, in his city is Fernanda´s Angel; and Fernanda is the Escaramujo, she lead us to believe that we all are citizens of the Universe.

The Iglesia de la Merced was built in 1680 and is one of the oldest churches in Casco Antiguo.For the last eight months, its external chapel has been under restoration by the architect Raul Murillo.

For such a small country, Panama has been known internationally by legends such as Roberto Duran (boxing), Lafitte Pincay (horse riding), Mariano Rivera (Yankees) and more recently Irving Saladino who won the first gold medal at an Olimpic Game for the country ever. Their common denominators have not only been the country where they where born in (Panama) but the fact that most of them come from very humble origins. Many of them lived at some stage in Casco Viejo.

By Friday, Plaza Catedral (known also as Plaza Independencia) had "new residents"... tents started to pop out, artists and hippies Woodstock style camped along with the Naso to support their cause. By Sunday, they had a small concert organized taking advantage that the Flea Market was going on.

The king is coming! The naso tribe has been camping for a while now at Plaza Catedral asking for a hearing with the President to talk about their relocation. The government is building a hydroelectric plant for which they have to be relocated... something that somehow they still haven´t figured out. So their king, Valentin Santana is coming this sunday to push the issue and create awareness on their cause.

This past month, we have seen two iconic cases gone to the papers provoking scandal among all who care and love our Cathedral Plaza: the overbuilding of PH Independencia and the falling of Hotel Central´s lateral calicanto wall. On both cases, the chapter of ICOMOS in Panama (a technical advisor to the UNESCO) has gone out to demand attention and to make sure political corruption won´t be an obstacle in the process.

What a weekend! Panama´s Presidential Election, How does it work? who won? what to expect?

It was about time! residents and business owners of Casco Antiguo are coming together to help Casco Antiguo develop the best way possible. AVACA for its name in Spanish, is open to everyone: residents, owners, business owners and Casco Antiguo fans.

Developing in Casco Viejo is both a science and an art. Experience and common sense have to blend with the historic restrictions and be sensitive to the environment. It is a complex process that we only recommend to people who have the correct skills and team behind them, and that will be on the ground full time for at least three years. While most of our clients might feel this is too much, every year I see examples of what can happen if something goes wrong. Yesterday, we witnessed a very sad example of lack of planning and the most basic common sense, which led to the partial destruction of one of Casco Antiguo´s most valuable icons.

"Raindrops are falling on my head".... but it doesn´t stop the carnival! Panama is entering into the rainny season, hated by many but highly appreciated by all nature lovers. United Nation´s economic agency for Latin America and the Caribbean called CEPAL (Comision Economica para America Latina y el Caribe / Economic Comission for Latin America and the Caribbean) published in its website their growth projections for the region for 2009. According to their economic study, Panama will grow over 3% this year, leading the region´s development and surviving the crisis better than its peers (at least for 2009).

All of this happening in Plaza Herrera! while always considered the "back" of San Felipe, somehow I´m getting the impression of being at a cutting edge front.

I am not joking when I say I have never seen anything move so fast in this country. I don´t know if it is because the Presidential Elections are so close now (in May)...

Great local food and sexy girls, Casco Antiguo Fashion Festival dressed up Plaza Catedral with the best of Panamanian fashion design and paid tribute to Panamanian photographer Gustavo Araujo who died tragically last December.

Physical model agency and Heineken are the hosts of the first Fashion Fest in Casco Viejo (that I know of). I have no idea of how this is going to turn out, but having the Casco flooded with chic looking people isn´t a bad idea at all!!!! So, more coming up later. One of the things I enjoy living here is that I can choose from a range of activities. Casco Antiguo is a step away from the countryside, which we call the "interior" (not really sure why....). We are also so close to the Canal Zone, that hiking primary jungle is possible within 15 minutes. Fishing at the lake, kayak around, so many things you can do! Check out the list of upcoming hikes by local clubs... join!

Breaking the cycle of poverty in Casco Viejo is really simple. It just takes dedication, knowledge and love. Children are so eager for these elements, they´ll do the rest. They have found a home in this program, and now their home just got better!

These past two weeks have been a frenzy for Ariel Espino and his team at Oficina del Casco Antiguo. Not only he was running business as usual with all the social programs the OCA has and building renovations that range from social housing within Casco Viejo to the rescue of old ruins and turning them into beautiful public spaces, but he was also - and for the first time at that office - launching an ambitious website, and even more, hosting a special UNESCO delegation that arrived to check on how things where going down here due to some letters they have gotten that the Casco was in danger.

Finally!!!!!!!! One of the axis of Casco Antiguo has its own website. We waited a long time, but it was well worth it! The website is a reflection of everything Casco Antiguo is: a mixed, vibrant community. Full of art, color and flavor. Congratulations!!! Also, a big hurray for Clara Hardin, our associate who appears at "Mi Barrio" ("our neighborhood".

Good news for opera lovers: the Fundacion Opera Panama will present this upcoming 24 and 26th of March "La Magia de la Opera" (Opera´s Magic) featuring young Panamanian talents and international opera singers.

In celebration for Women´s Day (or week... or year?) a friend just sent me one of these forwards with feminist jokes (which I happened to enjoy a lot by the way!) to give a laugh at the eternal extremes of the "battle of the sexes". In Casco Viejo, however, we celebrated with a significant event.

I´m sure that, if it wasn´t because of my little cellphone camera, people would say I make all this stuff up. But it is not true! my cellphone says so.

After a weird La Niña day (sun and light rain at the same time) the day was crowned... literally! with beauty.

Leaving forever the place you´ve been at for a long time and where your family and most of your friends are is quite a scary thought. But planning for a one or two year adventure in a cosmotropical country (where they can come and visit, or even join you) is a totally different thing!

Fiesta! This upcoming week is Panama´s most beloved holiday: Carnivals. It is said to be the only thing Panamanians take seriously. My personal opinion is that Carnivals are too extreme for my taste. However, visiting a country during its special holidays is the best way to enjoy a trip. With the US and specific places like New York going out of jobs for all ages, but specially the younger crowd, Panama, somehow is now attracting a completely different profile almost by accident: young, professional and entrepreneurial.

Danilo Perez and his music education revolution is storming throughout Panama! Started at Casco Antiguo with the creation of the Danilo Perez Music School at the old music Conservatory in Plaza Herrera and now music workshops are happening at several cities in the interior: Chitré, David (Chiriquí) and Colon. Although Havana Cafe opened right for the jazz fest, there was so much going on I couldn´t get to it. Also, I wanted to try it out first! So finally I got to go with a group of friends. My first impression was excellent:

Soap operas in Latinamerica are huge. I remember growing up watching all sorts of soap operas, from the funny Brazilian ones (sexy but at the same time with a naive sense of humor) to the more aggresive Mexican or the frankly confusing ( and loooooonnnnnggggg) Venezuelan productions.Panama did not wanted to be left out!

Last Friday a nice article came out at La Prensa by Harry Castro. It had fantastic pictures of one of the most elegant buildings of the time: the old Sociedad Española de Beneficencia. This institution survives today, but they long moved out of Casco Viejo to Hato Pintado. However, from its beginnings, it aimed to help all people in need, from widows to orphans.

Announcement to the community! Lorena Endara will be hosting a Yoga class at the roof terrace of Santa Familia (4th and A Avenue) this saturday. She also runs Deli Jardin and can fill your balcony with edible plants !

The 6th edition of the Panama´s Jazz Festival is on its 4th day. Yesterday, we went to an amazing concert hosted by the Spanish Embassy featuring Flamenco Jazz. A spicy combination!

When I was little I had dogs, cats a rabbit and even a hen. But I lived in a house in the suburbs, and pets where the "must do" of the area. When I moved to Casco Viejo, one of the things I never imagined having, as I´m living in an apartment, was to have a pet. But last week,

A historic event took place today. The old music conservatory came alive. A dream came true. Lives where changed. All because of two visionaries: Danilo Perez and Conservatorio S.A.

Althought the official calendar for the Panama Jazz Festival points out January 12th as the starting date for the festival, and even if the concerts are the better known part of the festival, in fact it really has a very important educational component that started early on this week.

Carlos Weil Art Gallery and the Ministry of Culture will present Jazz and Canal, a collective art show of antiques related to the Panama Canal: original bonds, photographies, paintings and even music scores. We have known Carlos for many years, and I have to say his collection is always intriguing and brings something different to the table. So don´t miss this opportunity! It will be at Las Bovedas Gallery in Plaza Francia.

As Christmas approaches, the city goes crazy. Yesterday, Panama´s traditional Christmas Parade took over Avenida Balboa. Thousands of kids running around, piling up to see the cars and trucks dressed up with miscellaneous Christmas themes. But where are all these props made? you would be surprised to know that the "Factory of Dreams" carved in foam is in Casco Viejo. More specifically, next to the Cathedral, run not by Santa but by Franz.

One of the fondest memories I have of Christmas is going to visit my grandmother ( a former Casconian, waaaayyyy back when…) and spend hours either making or playing with the Christmas Model Town. We call it “el nacimiento” which in few words describes a small town made out of toys featuring the Christian nativity scene. You could go all the way up with those things, there where those who took the entire garage in their homes and did a real mini Israel out of it.

Just came back from Miami Art Basel. These fairs are great because it is like an open discussion not only on social issues but on what beauty is for each one. Casco Antiguo has beautiful buildings, parks and scenes, it is true... but nothing beats the beauty of its people. And not beauty in the conventional magazine-model type but on the beauty of feeling just great even if you are wearing hair rolls that are twice the size of your head. And orange.

Skaters welcome to San Felipe! With the double purpose of keeping kids out of the streets and keeping them in good shape, we are sponsoring space for a Skate Park within one of our buildings. The guys from Flow (the skate and surf store) donated the materials, some equipment and training, and the kids brought their enthusiasm.

Last night, the Casco Antiguo community came together to celebrate the opening of Galeria Vida and Entre Pulgas. They took the opportunity to close up Calle 3era (behind Hotel Central) and have a neighborhood party with food and drinks for everyone. It was Christmas spirit all over, as right on the corner, Casa Gongora had the choir concert, singing traditional and Panamanian Christmas Carrols

Yesterday I had a fantastic evening with a client who is looking to move to Casco Antiguo next year. It was very interesting to hear him out, not only why he was moving out from the States (the financial crisis, the lack of opportunities for a young guy to get a business going unless you had a lot of cash) but also his view on why Panama (and Casco Viejo, of course) is his best strategy under the difficult circumstances.

Today I was having lunch at Casuale (calle 1era) and saw this historic photo... which I happened to have the current angle! freaky, no?

Somehow Panama managed to fit all its holidays in November (or most of them). Today is December 01st, but it is a holiday to celebrate November 28th, which was our independence from Spain (and "marriage" with Colombia, which later we divorced as well).Many don´t know this, but...

Last night we had a wonderful time. Under the rain, as Panama is going through a "cold front" that has affected Central America and our borders with Costa Rica terribly, a group of neighbors took the time and effort to share a special meal among friends and give thanks for the blessing of being well, in good health and in good spirits. For all the troubles of today´s world, both economic and natural, moments like yesterday have a special connotation.

Pilgrims and Indians sharing a meal... did it really happen? in a way, I think the lesson within the story (sharing, helping out) might be even as important as finding out the truth. Notice this is not a Panamanian celebration... but don´t worry! we are quick learners, so Casco will have it´s own party !

What does Casco Antiguo and Italy have in common? could be the European feeling, the brick streets, the stone ruins, the statues, the architects (some Italians built the best buildings in the Casco)... No! ..... there is something more than meets the eye...

One of the well known tactics to attract children anywhere is to have them make fun stuff. Aprojusan, a local ngo, uses art as honey to get local children to assist to their center. While they are there, they receive help with homework, basic healthcare and emotional support. Now, while we where trying to have a serious conversation... check out the madness around us! I was about to skip office to join them...

Casco Antiguo is not only a witness to Panama´s history but a huge outdoors classroom. One of schools favorite activities is the "paseos" with their students, teaching them about their origins. It is all here!

I had the most interesting talk with a client today. He is a passionate guy from Catalunya (Spain), someone who not only loves food but understands it to its roots. He mentioned he had a blog, so of course I ran to check it out. I was incredibly surprised to see my favorite Casco Antiguo spots in them!

A friend forwarded me a NY Times article the other day on how Buffalo, a historic city in USA was looking to the future. It described an active community and a common vision to see their city not become Disney World, but an authentic, green and thriving place. There is still those who ask "when is it going to be finished"... my answer is right here...

Cities are a reflection of the people who lived and built them. There is no doubt about that, as architecture is made to our own meassure and that of our dreams and comforts. Here is an interesting article by journalist David Kaufman at the Financial Times which compares the eclectic styles of Tel Aviv to Panama´s Casco Antiguo.

Time almost stops in Casco Antiguo on Sundays. It is the best time for strolling down the plazas and enjoy the "dolce far niente" (the sweet "doing nothing"). If you are good at those table games like chess, backgammon and checkers you can try your skills against the best at Santa Ana park and get your boots cleaned while you are at it. But beware: the laid back atmosfere might take you over, not even the dogs escape from its spell!!!

Last night (finally!) I went to see Quantum of Solace.I was incredibly pleased to discover how Casco Viejo looked under Marc Forster´s eye: it was very raw but also mixed with elegant and a lot of texture. Find out what they think about filming in Panama!

A pioneer program at Casco Antiguo is changing the lives of underprivileged residents.

Carlos Endara Andrade was the leading photographer of his time. He lived between 1865 and 1954 and is responsible for a big bunch of the pictures you know that are floating around the internet and other publications on Panama´s early days as a republic and surroundings (he did a lot on Taboga as well). His portraits provide a window to the diverse Panamanian society of the times, which in many ways are the basis of today´s society. Now, a private museum in Casco Viejo has opened its doors to show his work. A wonderful place full of inspiration, a unique window to the roots of Panama.

Arco Chato is one of the most known landmarks in Casco Viejo and is a direct responsible on why the Panama Canal is here and not in Nicaragua. After years of being neglected, it finally fell in 2003. I call it a lesson on never taking stuff for granted, and that things like a "country" aren´t just there... they need to be nurtured and taken care of. Now is back up and with new additions that will give a boost to the local community.

Night of art and music in Casco Antiguo

During the last weekend after completing the Second Songwriter Festival on Casa Góngora in San Felipe, Spanish singer-songwriter Jesús Garriga visited us and delighted us with his music on this great festival.

Last night was the opening night of Panama´s National Ballet performance of La Bayadere (known also as Bayaderka), the famous ballet from Marius Petipa where Prince Solor marries Princess Gamzatti, although he is really in love (and had sworn loyalty) to Nikiya, the temple dancer. Alexa Gutierrez, from Panama, danced on Nikiya´s roll, one of my favorite I´ve seen from her so far.

The 6th edition of the Panama Jazz Fest in 2009 is already on its way. Music, workshops, scholarships and a new music school in Panama by the Foundation Danilo Perez. Where? when?

It was the perfect romantic, sweet, cuddle-up-with-your-best-half concert of the year!

October is a special month for Casco Antiguo, as it is the 100th anniversary month of Panama´s National Theatre. It started with the Pink Ribbon campaign (totally unrelated to the Theatre, however!) for breast cancer awareness, but it will continue with more interesting activities such as a special Gala Performance by the National Ballet of La Bayadere (featuring Alexa Gutierrez from Panama and Ivana Kozomara from Belgrado) and Madame Butterfly

I first visited Havana Vieja in Cuba around 1996. It was a very interesting trip from which I learned a lot about our common roots, despite our different current political lives. Culture and architecture reflects our spirits...

So the countdown for Quantum of Solace has begun! Everyone in Casco Viejo is bitting nails... when! when!!!!! we certainly want to see Daniel Craig, but more importantly... we want to see ourselves!!!!

Heriberto Trejos had a big smile on his face. A group of women who live in San Felipe, Santa Ana and Chorrillo are being interviewed to participate in a hotel training course organized by Fundacion Calicanto. As the manager of the foundation, Heriberto has a diverse portfolio of social projects, all of them with a common goal: breaking the cycle of poverty in the local families of Casco Antiguo, allowing them to take control of their lives and be an active element of the thriving future of the historic city.

A classic Monday morning in Casco Viejo: I was on the phone and at the same time answering emails (or deleting early spam… somehow the prince of Mombatu is still considering sending me at least $200,000 directly to my bank account, no papers signed) when suddenly a loud noise started to approach. “Drums…. Drums in the deep”…

Ever since the slavery trade times, African traditional religions have been concealed by their followers under Cristianity... for obvious reasons. Today, many, many years later, the reminiscents are still there. And in Casco Viejo, very much alive!

A group of Panamanian artists, including Blanca Dávalos and Yiyi Barra from La Casona have been worried about other artistic media gaining too much space over painting. They´ve planned a full month of painting exhibitions with seven different artists at La Casona, which will be up for a month starting September 25th. It will include Panamanian artists Rolando De Sedas, Ricaurte González, Silvia Costa, Manuel S. López and Cristina Garrido, and international painters Damien Prouvost and Dahiana Bukschtein. Panama´s art Bienal is probably one of the most important events in the year for painting, plastic arts and media. This year, the theme is the ex "Canal Zone". Its history and influence in our society. The making of the Panama Canal and its political and social interaction as a "nation within a nation" literally shaped Panama in obvious ways... but also in very subtile ways.

A new client recently asked me “Is Casco Viejo gay friendly?” For a moment I had to think about the question. You see, growing up as a ballet dancer I never even gave a thought to it.

With the ramping increase in oil prices, transportation is becoming more expensive. Still, in Panama it is possible to take a taxi for as low as $1.35, depending of course, on where you are going. The Fish Market rocks. It is at the very entrance of Casco Viejo, just off Avenida Balboa. A white and light blue building with the Japanese flag and the Panamanian flag on the top of the building (the new fish market installations where a donation of the Japanese government). As you approach, the characteristic smell of fresh fish will hit you: don´t get discouraged.

Last Saturday a nice article came out about Casco Viejo (which in Panama is known as San Felipe, Catedral, la Ciudad... so many names!). I looked for it in the electronic version of La Prensa, but couldn´t find it. So here is my translation and the original piece scanned at the bottom. For the last two years, La Casona de las Brujas has been the center of the Panamanian bohemian scene. The space located at the old Maria Imaculada School near Plaza Herrera served as art gallery, concert hall, disco, art school for local children and just the favorite afterhours neighborhood hang out.

Panama´s National Theatre was literally born with the Republic. The need to build it was at the first Gacetas Oficiales in 1903 - 1904 along with main stuff like a Presidential Palace and public bathrooms. It was the heart of social life and culture. Today, we celebrate its 100 year anniversary with a bit of history and wonderful events in August and October.

We received a flash note from Quintessentially announcing the next "Silent Auction" of Fundacion San Felipe. This year, it will be held at the Marriott hotel, and all proceeds will go to their various programs ranging from art to photography for kids.

It´s Director is a dinamyc architect with a passion for historic cities, which makes it perfect. Often your best memories of places where you have been are actually from people you have met. In Casco Antiguo we are lucky to still have with us "antique" residents that are very much part of the different textures of this neighborhood. Miss Daisy is one of them...

I had a literature teacher that used to say: taking out the obvious great masters, at the end of the day, the line between art and non art these days is very fine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There used to be a clear difference between folk, handcraft and art. Today, it is all fusion, pieces dancing from one concept to the other, depending on the latest critic review. However, she said, don´t be ashamed if you feel confused. Think about this: if YOU enjoy it, it is art to you. And if the artist brings love to its work, then it is in it´s purest form.

Sometimes the world´s problems overwhealm you: politicians are doing their best to make your life worst, news of contamination, low education in the new generations, Dooms Day. But sometimes we are reminded that we do have the power to change things around. We actually excersice that power every day... That is one of the many things I like about Casco Viejo. Small projects have a huge impact... check this out and get inspired.
